Champions Twenty20 League formally launched

The BCCI-backed Champions Twenty20 League has been formally launched with a commitment from the men in charge that it would give priority to the ICC’s Future Tours Programme. The launch, which followed a meeting among top officials of the BCCI, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa in Mumbai, confirmed most details previously announced but left the tournament’s venue yet to be confirmed.

ICL begins pre-season camp

Steve Rixon, the former Australian wicketkeeper and now an Indian Cricket League (ICL) coach, will coordinate a pre-season camp for ICL players in Bangalore starting today. While Rixon will focus on developing young domestic players, Jock Campbell, ICL’s high performance director, will supervise the overall proceedings.

First Edition of Champions League to be held in India

The first Champions League will be played in India this year, said Lalit Modi, the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) official and the Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner on Monday. Modi said that the matches will be played in three venues - Jaipur, New Delhi and Mohali from September 29 to October 8.

Eight teams are expected to participate in the event that will include the teams securing the first and the second positions in the domestic Twenty20 events of South Africa and Australia, besides the winner and runner-up of the IPL.

IPL warn ECB over Twenty20 Champions League stance

The head of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has warned the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over their stalling in backing the Twenty20 Champions League. IPL chairman Lalit Modi has said that the Twenty20 Champions League will take place with or without English sides.

ECB to unveil Twenty20 Champions League

The England and Wales Cricket Board are set to announce that they have formed their own Champions League Twenty20 tournament, which will take place in the Middle East this autumn. David Collier, the ECB chief executive, was in the Middle East last week to meet a businessman interested in bankrolling a tournament with a £2.5million prize fund that is expected to take place in Abu Dhabi from Sept 30-Oct 6. “Talks are at an advanced stage,” an ECB source said.

No plans to shelve Champions League: Modi

Indian Premier League Commissioner Lalit Modi on Thursday dismissed media reports about plans to shelve the Champions League and said dates for the inaugural Twenty20 event would be announced soon. “There is no plan to shelve the Champions League. We will decide on the dates of the Champions League after the Champions Trophy,” Modi told PTI.
